We're pretty much on the other side of the world (Glasgow, Scotland, UK), me, my workshop and my lathe, a Milford (made in England) yes yes Milford - not Myford...

It's a beautiful lathe, in such wonderful condition, but I find very hard to get any info about it anywhere ! So it gets very hard to buy for. I'm looking for a scroll chuck for it, but even the simple task of finding the right thread is a nightmare !
But it's one of those that is all engineered and beautifully machined...
So any info, anything would be greatly appreciated...

Hi Cello Girl welcome to the mad house as you see above there is a link to a little bit about the Milford not much there sorry.

What size is the spindle thread? adaptors can be made and being in an excellent part of the world for good Scottish engineers you might find someone will to assist.

Give Issac Curran a shout he more local to you then we are and maybe able to help out quicker he has the VB36 which is much like the Milford.

The spindle is 25mm and it very looks like a 8 tpi. Only the other side of the head, for bigger bowls, the thread is different !
I'll definitely talk to an engineer... probably today...

Hi Cello Girl, I am not a woodturner but have a reasonable interest in machinery. I find it strange that there is a mix in units for the info supplied by you, mm for diameter and TPI . But I believe that 1inch 8TPI is one of the fairly common spindle thread standards, and is only 0.4mm diameter off what you stated. I suspect that you should be able to get a chuck to suit fairly easily, or alternatively a commercial adaptor to transition from spindle to a locally available chuck. Don't know what your overall plans are, but if you need to go via adaptor, you might want to consider a chuck that mounts directly to the larger thread on the other end of the spindle and an adaptor to let it mount on the near end. As I said, not a woodturner so might be making rubbish suggestions, but I am confident that 1in 8TPI is one of the standard spindles.

Dear Mel,
Thank you for your very useful reply. Sorry for the mix of unit. TBH I'm French and (albeit leaving in the UK) I'm very unfamiliar with Imperial. My calliper that I used for measuring the diameter is in mm but I know that tpi used to identify threads on a lathe like mine would be Imperial... Hence the mix...
I have suspected the spindle to be 8tpi at one end so that's half of the problem solved as many chucks come in 8tpi, so loads to choose from. For the other end, I planning a visit to a local (lovely, tiny) metalwork workshop and see if they can make an adaptor for me...

About the nice Milford on lathes.co.uk... Well it's mine ! Poor Tony I called last year to get info on my lathe didn't ever heard of Milford before ! I ended up sending him pics of mine for his database...
It doesn't look like this anymore (quite) : it's been dusted and professionally reconnected to the mains, I changed the belt so now it runs so smooth !
It's been cleaned and greased and... Well I've used it since... We still need to get to know each other though...
I've decided that the bowl end is a 8tpi so today I've bought a Patriot chuck (Robert Sorby) and corresponding insert (left hand).
The other thread turns out to be 10tpi.
What I would love to do is turn my own pegs for my instruments (and a few bowls when I'm on holiday !)
