Floating floors
I have a centre-hall house plan (an old style house). I am planning on putting laminate flooring down the hall and into two rooms off the hallway. Is it best to lay the boards lengthways or crossways? The hall is just the width of the length of the boards.I have put down a plywood veneer over the existing old floor because of irregularities.

Lengthways. The instructions will tell you this also. For the floor to work properly, it needs to be laid in a brickwall pattern.

Lengthwise
Lengthwise is looks best even for shorter lengths laid in brick bond. Your eye tends to go with the line of the board and the direction you are heading.
