Bookmarking

This may be a stupid question, but.........
How can I bookmark a particular post that I want to access later? I remember seeing a post some years ago on an ingenious overcentre lifter on a mobile based bandsaw and have spent the afternoon searching what seems to be the entire history of the forum to try and find it, without success. I think that there must be a way of flagging a post that I want to file away for future reference, without cutting and pasting into Word.

I have done this in Mozilla Firefox just by clicking on Bookmarks then Bookmark this Page.

However I have found that bookmarking a thread is not a foolproof of coming back to it, as threads can disappear and in particular the pictures within the thread. Niki's post on a cross cutting sled is a recent example.

What I do is print the thread to a pdf file, Thread Tools, Show Printable version, then print to Adobe Acrobat's which creates a pdf file. I then also open each picture, if they are attachments, and save as a jpg file. Saves a lot of searching later, as I find the forum search function is not very specific and unless you know exactly what you are looking for it can be elusive.

I have Adobe Acrobat, but if you don't there a number of free pdf print emulators available, Download.com is a good place to start.

I have set up a folder structure with separate folders for Tablesaws (seeing we can't have a separate forum), Bandsaws Routers, Hand Tools etc etc.

Makes a great resource and is always available. I started this when I was still on dial up and wanted to have this info available all the time, but have just continued doing it.

Hate to think how space it takes up on the notebooks' HDD, oh well they are cheap these days!

What browser are you using?

In FF I simply drag and drop the url into the bookmarks toolbar, the same can be done in IE. If you right click on the toolbar, click on "New Folder" and type "Favourite Posts" or whatever, then drag the new button onto it. You then have a drop down list. I hope that makes sense.

The Google toolbar allows you to save your favourites on the internet, making them available wherever you are.

As for searching the forums. Try the Google search at the bottom of each page. Click in the radio button next to o www.woodworkforums.com first and you should get a really comprehensive search happening.

Also in FireFox, if there's a page I want to keep, I simply go up to Files/Save Page As and store it on my HDD, changing the name of the file from _whatever_.php.html to _appropriate name_.html

This'll save the page and also create a subdir of _appropriate name_ which contains all the images on that page. Usually only the thumbnails and directly embedded pix are saved, to get the full-sized images you need to follow the thumbnail links and DL those as well.

A tad clumsy, but it works well enough for me that I've nearly a full CD of forum threads "archived away..."

This does not happen if members upload the picture to the forum as the photos become an integral part of the thread. Threads of any worth pretty much never disappear.

Take the time to format the pictures so that they will upload to here as then it becomes a permanent resource for everyone.

I'm like Bigshed, I save interesting threads as pdf's for my own future reference. In Firefox I select all, copy, then paste into openoffice I then open all attached pics and paste into the open office document. When finished I save as a pdf with big pics instead of with thumbnails.

Sometimes theres a bit of messing around this way but it makes a good file. So if photobucket etc goes down then the thread isn't lost to me.

DJ, you're right on the money - just what I was looking for. I tried all sorts of searches without success. This particular instance, I must admit, I didn't do a search on "bandsaw lifter thingy"
Neil, I'm using Firefox and the only Google search I can find is on the top of the page, so I'll give that a go.
BS, Groggy, Echnidna, Skew, I've used various adaptations of your suggestions with varying success but they're all a bit cumbersome. I have taken to printing out the bits I want to keep and filing them as hard copy. I guess I just wanted to be able to click on Save As without going back to find "File not found".

I would say that Neil's talking about this bit at th bottom of the page... and I'm using Firefox too. Click the button underneath to restrict it to searching just these forums.

Now there's a puzzle. When I looked at DJs link and clicked on the thread, the google search came up at the bottom of the page, but on my normal view, there is nothing in the gap above "all times are GMT+10" except "forum jump". Any ideas on how to bring it into view?

Found it! Changed Style chooser from Neil's to UBeaut. I can now Google search!

What i do now is highlight the post right click hit copy , open word and save the page .Don't ask me crazyscew showed me how to do it that way.
