blanket box

years ago I got this campher laurel blanket box. This was before wood restoration goy into my system well I sanded it down and cleaned it up then rubbed huge amounts of a beeswax type wax (I think:confused: ) now Id like to get it finished properly.
Ive bought new brass wear for hinges, clasps and carry handles that will aged somehow. The locks were non existant and Iam in 2 minds weather to leave the holes 'natural as now' or make a brass plate that would have a new key hole slot in ithem.
Also suggestions please on finishing should I scrape the existing wax off and start again if so with what I open to polite suggestions.
This had come out from England and did have aLondon newspaper in it advertising the world premier of 'A Bridge to Far' ( mid 70's) I sold that single page for $50.:eek:

Whatever you do, I'm glad you will do it carefully to keep it's value as an antique. Did it originally have key plates on it?

Any chance of keeping it original in brass and finish, or do you wish to simply re-finish?

My personal preference would be to gently remove the wax and refinish with shellac.

Wendy, yes keep it original as possible thats why I hope to be able to 'age' the new brass. But how does one remove the wax........... himmmmm tightly close mouth pull strip off quickly without tearing but in a downwards motion..................... got ya........... Tony

HOW DO I KNOW I NEED TO USE A POLISH REVIVER?

Lightly scratch the surface of the furniture with your fingernail:

If it removes some wax. You need it!
If the surface feels sticky or rubbery. You need it!
If the surface is water marked, or white rings. You need it!
If the surface is dull, dry, faded or is scratched. You need it!
