    Default recycled timber for table

    Hi all,

I'm looking for some pre-loved, character-filled timber for a table that doesn't cost the earth, that will withstand the day to day life with kids (and the odd drunken dinner party). I will be attempting to make a French farmhouse style table with a panelled top, breadboard ends, above a plain rail. It will be my first attempt at building a table. I haven't decided exactly which type of timber as yet, but was thinking of something like Spotted Gum, Ironbark, Blackbutt (or similar) depending on what’s available, what has character and that has a well lived look, and cost. Table size to be around the 770 x 780 x 2100 therefore needing timber of approximately the following dimensions: Table 4 x 2000-2200mm (L) x 160-200mm (W) x 25-30mm (T). Plus timber for apron and legs etc.

If anyone has any suggestions on where I could get the recycled timer from in Sydney and estimated costs, I’d be grateful.

    Thanks,
    RG

Hi RG, in Newcastle I go to the nearest recycle yard unless I can find some on a demolition site that they are willing to sell. At the yards here you need to allow around $10 - $14 per linial metre for that sort of timber. I would imagine Smogney is more expensive.
