Default Man Convicted For Staring At Woman

An Italian man has been given a suspended jail sentence for staring too intensely at a woman sitting in front of him on a train. A judge sentenced the man in his 30s, whose name was not revealed, to 10 days in prison and a 40 euro ($68) fine after a 55-year old woman filed a complaint for sexual harassment.

The two met on two separate occasions in 2005 on a commuter train going from Lecco, a town in northern Italy, to Milan. The first time, the man sat next to the woman but she felt he had moved too close for comfort. The next day, the man sat in front of the same woman and according to her complaint, stared at her for the whole journey. The two did not speak.

At least, that's what she said. Without hearing both sides of the story we'll never know, but I wonder if there were any corroborating witnesses.

Come on guys - this is an Italian court! Home of bottom pinchers, leerers, gropers and extreme macho displays! (Italy that is, not necessarily the court!)

That the court decided this bloke's behaviour was extreme enough to warrant a fine and a jail sentence is a fair enough indication of just how obnoxious his behaviour was. If some bloke did that to YOU on a train I wonder how you'd react?

You'd have to hope the court did the right thing, you can't assume the newspapers reported it anywhere near correctly though.

For the record I'd be off the train like a shot, I think Wongo has met this guy before.

If it was a long journey that must have been rather uncomfortable for the bloke.
I thought harassment required unwanted advances if she didn't speak to him, how was he to know his affections weren't being returned.
She could have leaned forward put her arms around his head and pulled it down on the bus seat until he passed out from lack of air.

How did she know he was staring at her "for the entire journey," unless she also happened to be staring at him non-stop?

Bloody sexism, that's what it is...
