Would these work for the base of a workbench?
Guys
I am looking at building a new large workbench and at first I was going to use two(2) x (90x90mm) timber for each leg however even in pine is so expensive.
So each leg would therefore be 180mm wide by 90mm thick.
Today at Bunnings I noticed these Jarrah sleepers.
Well they do not look like sleepers in the traditional sense.
What do you think? Would they make a decent enough base for the bench?
The link to them on the Bunnings website is here: http://www.bunnings.com.au/200-x-50m...eper-_p0010624

They might, but they also might pretzel after a few months, as landscape grade timber is pretty much bottom of the barrel.
I had a massive case of the time-poors when I put my benches together and just used some of the Bunnies metal assemble-a-bench things. Cost about $80 for legs and rails, and they are quite sturdy. I had some solid core doors that I used as benchtops, though.
Infilling them with cabinetry is on my round tuit list.

The link doesn't get me to them but I would say that they would most certainly be capable of using for a base for a bench. I imagine that the price is quite good for you to look at them as I said the link only gets me to a local bunnings and they don't list that item, but that should be very solid for what you want.
Regards Rod.

I don't know how good quality they would be - I occasionally look at bunnings sleepers and most of them are cracking, pith-containing good-for-nothing-but-going-in-the-garden pieces of wood. If you were considering 90x90 pine for a base, then would you consider gluing 2 bits of 90x45 construction pine together? Only about 7 bucks a metre (maybe less) and it'll do the job just fine.

Cheers guys
- I am also a little worried that it is landscape grade although it doesn't seem any where near the grade of what the proper sleepers used to look like, ie these new ones seem much better.
- I have definitely thought of gluing together two 95x45mm pieces. The problem is that in the structural timber the pieces are pencil around on the edges, so I would need to machine them down a bit. A guess I could do that but would just be wasting timber I guess?
I could also use dressed pine but it would be sitting on the ground in my garage so maybe termites, not sure, I have lots of old Jarrah on the garage floor so I hope that is ok?

Have decided to go with H2 Treated Pine.
I was cutting some yesterday and though, sh*t should I be using a mask with this stuff.
I cannot sand it as it would remove the blue stuff, so will probably have to paint it.
Anyone know if breathing it in for a couple of days will cause any issues?
I will probably have to joint a few of them flat to glue together as well so I don't want to breathe in that stuff either.
Cheers

The Legs.
Hi Arry,
Why not save some Dollars & Laminate some Pine Pieces together for the Legs.
I'm sure if you have a look out the back Waste Yard of Bunnings, you will find some Pine there, that wood be good enough for Legs.
Of course you have to ask, but I've found that not to be a problem.
Some of it I have found to be European Pine of some kind. It was very good to Turn, & looked a lot different to our Raidiata ??
Wood like to think this may help.Regards,
issatree.

Arry,
I have some 150x150 Jarrah posts that you can have for a pretty good price. They are feature grade but pretty solid. Let me know if you would like to come and have a look. 0417175590. (I am not sure whether you have decided on the Pine or actually purchased it?)

Yes. They will work...
...provided you're after an old farm-style outdoor workbench that you'll break down old engines on, or occasionally use as a chopping block, or...
If you're after something more refined, well...
I'd use 'em. But my name's not Krenov.
