Hello all,

I am posting to inform you that if you are looking for someone to restore or maintain your timber sash and casement windows then your search may be over.

I own and run a business in Scotland specializing in the restoration, insta llation and maintenace of sash and casement windows. I recently got married and am traveling with my wife on a round the world ticket. We will be arriving in Australia in the last week of January in Melbourne and hope to travel up the coast through Sydney and then on up to Cairns before we fly to Perth at the end of March. We are keen to do some kind of work while we are in Australia and we believe that there is a market for the kind of service that I specialise in. We can be very flexible with dates and would consider changing our proposed travel route for any reasonable offer of work. Written references and pictures of work can be provided on request.

Yer right Stirlo...he does need a proper visa(working holiday or 417).

Which shouldnt be to hard to get if he hasnt tuned 31 by the time of his trip. Otherwise I think it will be next to impossible to get a working visa for that kind of work unless he can find a sponsor

There's not a lot of call for that type of specialized work. Even if you had a working visa it would be too much hassle setting yourself up with insurances, ABN, GST requirements etc, and what sort of guarantee could you give when you'll probably be out of the country before too long. A decent chippy could fix up any type of window sashes anyway.
If you need the dough, just get yourself some work picking fruit or labouring for someone who needs a hand. They'll have all the insurances and paperwork covered.

The other consideration is licensing. I don't know about other states but in Qld you need a QBSA licence for pretty much any building work in excess of $1100 (inc GST), and no, you can't break the job up into sections to get around it. Hardly any older houses with double hung windows in Cairns and precious few of the old timber ones with casements left (Although I have fixed a few hundred casements in the Cairns area.)
