    Default Do a search...

From time to time (actually, quite often) someone asks a reasonable question but one which has been dealt with several times before and some 'old hands' here say "do a search. it has all been answered before. Ask us if there is something new to ask after you have read all those earlier threads."(or something similar but more direct). Such as this recent thread on tablesaws.

The really good threads find there way into Best of the Best. But sometimes we don't regard the thread itself as really good, but it deals with really interesting or useful things and others will find the results of the discussions in there very helpful.

So I thought that it might be an idea to put together a couple of threads on long-running issues where I have collected the previous threads and do a summary of the story so far. One example would be on plane fettling, another might be chisel restoration, another would be using epoxy for boats,. I am sure others would have ideas for similar questions. It would be good if these were kept somewhere realtively accessible (maybe as a new part of 'Best of the Best') as a kind of FAQ on subjects.
    Cheers

This has been suggested before. Do a search.

Go ahead and do it. Put together a good thread on say, poxy in boats, and I'm sure you can convince the local moderator (me ) to make it a sticky - seriously. The admin staff here are quite happy for the members to do some of the hard work and you'll find we always reward those who put in the effort.

OK, thanks for that Richard. What I propose is that when I do a search that yields up a rich vein of material I will collect links to each of the threads with good stuff in them on the subject and do a brief synopsis of what is in that thread. It will, of course be "occasional" and "sporadic" depending on what is interesting me and what searches I have done....

BTW no pride of authorship issues here - if anyone else wants to do this for themselves please be my guest.
    Cheers

I've lost interest in topics covered by 'a search' because of the sometimes MANY non-relevant asides, or hijacking of the thread - these can cause hours of additional reading and frustration. I do like the humour here but occasionally its placement is wrong. (That's my two bobs worth).

Default I will go one better.

Re Searching: If you use the Google search found at the top of every page and NOT the forum search you can refine it down to just relevant posts. Make sure you put a dot in the empty hole next to woodworkforums.com and you will have a much more responsive search.

JMK if you find the relevant posts and pm me a link, I will go through and edit out the crap before it goes up.

The original thread will stay but the edited one can be put up some where else probably in best of the best forum.

Another idea that may work is a cross referenced index to various techno topics

    Hi

Even using the google search function I still have trouble locating specific posts so can someone show me how to do it correctly.

A couple of days ago I was searching (fair dinkum) for grinding jigs.

I found one where "GATIEP" had pic's of a jig (see attached)

I put into google and picked the www.woodworkforums.com bit and typed in "Gatiep jig" and had two pages of results.

I couldnt find it in them.

I imagine I'm doing something wrong

PS. my first was actually gatiep AND jig which brought up 2 pages. If I did "gatiep jig" I get about 12.
