Gday
Hello
Frank from Canberra here.
Lately got interested in metal lathes, and I am learning about them. So far have used a Myford (can't remember model), a Schaublin (name??), and a small Lorch, all great machines.
I like in particular watchmakers/jewellers' lathes, but I am aware that newer - more fuctional lathes may offer a wider range of project opportunities.
I am also aware of the old (e.g. wear) vs new argument. Would like to purchase a mini metal lathe one day (not by choice, bench space at a premium!).
For now, just dreaming.
Great forum you guys have here, friendly and with lots of info.
Cheers
Frank

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Frank".
You should find quite a few forum members in Canberra.
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork/metalwork.

Frank,
Welcome aboard, I too have a myford metal Lathe and abd I have little idea how to use it. Would love to have someone give me some pointers along the way.
If you want to meet a few from the forum and some from other places who share a passion for Wood Working you may like to check this out. We wont thow you out cause your into steel
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f25/ww...2014-a-170839/
At this time it looks like we will have a variety of competent woodworkers there with skills in flat work, wood turning, carving and perhaps milling.
It will kick-off about lunchtime Friday and run thru till Sunday (if some want to stay Sunday night that is fine too)
Opportunity to spend one on one with some of these and whoever else is there and willing to share there time and expertise.
The invitation for you and whoever comes - bring some tools, bring some wood (these are optional but desired if possible) you can sell, swap, work with it or just watch others.
Mandatory if you come - a smile, willing spirit, desire to have fun learn and enjoy yourself.
Hope to see you there, if cant make it we'll see you round the forum and who knows maybe at some other event
Take Care

Hi Dave
thanks for your invitation - it is a great welcome, and it is truly appreciated.
My interest in lathes stems from my long-lasting passion - watchmaking.
In fact, my great ambition would be to own one day a Schaublin or a small/precision Myford lathe that I could use for in watchmaking practice.
I must say that your invitation makes me feel very welcome in this community.
Thank you again.
Cheers
Frank

Hi Frank,
I have looked at a few watchmaking lathes. I'm a bit of a collector owning 11 lathes now. I would like to open a working woodworking museum. Not sure how much these are worth, I've seen a few on eBay around the $200 mark. I'd have to do some research to know anything about the one you mention. There is a uk site that has information on a great number of lathes just can't remember which one it is
If you did come along and had a watch lathe that would be awesome to see too
