Mystery Saw...Need Help With ID
I've had this saw for several years now, and haven't been able to identify it. It has no etch or die stamp, no medallion, and no patent dates, nothing to help identify it but the saw itself. Any help will be appreciated. Here are some pictures.https://www.woodworkforums.com/attach...1&d=1335734424

Hi Toby,
If forced to guess, I'd be thinking Harvey W Peace, there were a number of makers that used side plate re-inforcing like that, but the handle shape is most like the Harvey Peace 110... Just a wild guess...
The handle shape is closer than any of the other candidates, but still not a positive match, it was normal practice to have more screws in the longer model saws, and yours looks to be in the upper end of the length range, so 4 screws isn't be a surprise..

Ray is most likely right - he usually is.
A couple of others that you might like to chase up are a Disston number 85 side plate saw, and possibly a Jesse Lane -.
One thing for sure, those domed nuts make it pretty old - maybe pre-1900.
Cheers

Maybe this was it ... sorta similar ... but no help with info.
Rare Vintage Old Hand Saw | eBay
I don't know how the first guy decided that his saw was HC Weber.
I've stared at the very faint etch in those photos and I think there is a kinda horse/griffin looking figure in there ... which is nothing like the clear etch which is all words.
Sorry I can't help any more.
Paul.

Thanks Ray,
Actually, my saw is only 25.5" , must look long in the picture. There are enough differences in the Peace ( thumb notch on top of handle, shape of the fingers hole, blade placement in handle, nib) that I don't think it's a 110.
Thanks Scribbly,
I have looked at the Disston #85 Standard saw in the 1918 catalog, and I've seen two Jesse Lane saws. I have also seen sideplate saws from Atkins, McNiece ( two different styles of handles), and Cresson, as well as other "nameless" saws, but they are definitely not the same.
Thanks for your help, If you have any other thoughts on the saw please let me know.

Hi Paul,
The top of the handle on the one you linked to is markedly different to Toby's saw, this one of Marv's Identified as Jessie Lane,
It's similar to the Disston 85 in the 1918 catalog, but the Disston 85 is actually closer to the handle profile in Toby's saw. The Disston catalog list it under "Special Saws Etched to Order"
The other on Marv pictures (unidentified) looks like a Wheeler Madden and Clemson style handle with that pronounced thumb hook.
Just while we are passing by, I reckon Marv's unidentified saw is pretty close to this one..
Here's the Disston 85
And Here's the ebay Henry Weber, different handle shape on the top.
So, I'm thinking Disston 85 should go on the list of likely suspects, together with the Harvey Peace...

You're right Ray (... I can see myself saying that a lot ...)
I had been looking at the ebay one on the weekend, and looking for info on the Weber name and found those few links, so when Toby posted his my brain slipped a gear and ran the keyboard
It was only after posting a few times that I went back to the original picture and thought ... you idiot ... (familiar territory).
Some beautifully restored handle sets there! Masterfully done.
And thanks for the 085 picture - I hadn't been able to find what it was.
Personally I do think the 110 looks very close to Toby's. The main difference I am seeing now is that his handle is close up to the blade like a Disston D8, where the 110 is set out like (most of) the D7s I have seen.
Maybe it was a different number HP saw?
I have read that Harvey Peace (and others) were being pursued legally by Disston ... and I have seen online that some Atkins 5x's look like a D8 and some 6x's look like a #12 ... and I've seen the thumb-hole D8 look in Spear & Jackson, Atkins, Hordern (a re-brander?), and (I think) Simmonds.
So I am guessing that they must have had a 'D8 ripoff' at some stage?
Cheers,
Paul.

Wow! Thanks Ray, I've seen all of those, but seeing all of them together is very helpful. Marv Werner's saw, is of the Holden Patent style, but it may not be a W,M,& C.
Thanks Paul, I'll take all the help I can get! I appreciate the effort, and the research.
Can anyone come up with an image for any of these?....Spear & Jackson "Aetna" and Shurly & Dietrich no. 6 and no. 25?
I appreciate all the help guys.

I just noticed something, the handle on the no. 85 Standard, is the same as a regular D-8 ( makes sense ).
