Default Just off the saw horse

The wood is Huon Pine and Tasmanian Myrtle with Victorian Ash burl veneer, the draw dividers are Huon Pine and the finish is Zinsser Bullseye French Polish with a final coat of wax, time taken 28 hours.

SWMBO wants to learn the game but is unsure of my checkmate move!!

The Zinsser Bullseye French polish is new on the market and differs from other French Polishes in the medium used to mix the shellac it is an expensive product $38.00 for a US pint (450ml aprox) but it goes on easily and bodies up well.

That's excellent Phil. Did you turn the chessmen as well?

I know but I read about in on the internet and thought that I would try it, although I suspect that most of the price was mark up on markup.

Nice work that. Damn quick too, one day I may get that sort of efficiency up!

Been bugging me for a couple of minutes though - where do the poor old pawns go when they are used as bait and get wiped from the board?? Is the drawer longer than shown? Please don't hurt me too much if the answer is staring right at me and I have just overlooked the obvious
    Cheerio.

    Hi Shannon

The draw goes right through and can be opened from both sides i.e. it pushes through to the other side the draw has separate compartments for all the chess men plus compartments for draughts pieces. To see some other work and workshop layout check out my web page http://www.users.bigpond.com/phillipmarkspencer/

    Default Chess board

When I looked at your photo of the board, I thought I was seeing things!
I will try to enclose a photo of one that I made about a year ago. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that my drawer is actually two drawers, one on each side, and they are not divided. A good idea, that. I will try to oncorporate it in the next one- if I make another one.
Mine is made of Otways Blackwood, Sapwood for the light pieces and heartwood fro the dark. The chessmen are the same- My son-in-law has a bush block in the Otways which has masses of beautiful Blackwood.
I hope I can send the picture...
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again-- then give up.
It's no use bashing your head against a wall!

Checked out your site, quite a accomplished crafter arent you!
The shop layout looks like good use of a small space.
I pretty sure your book is here in my town at the reigonal development board office!
