Rosewood - NOOB
Hi Folks,
Intro -My name is Kurt, I'm a long time listener, first time caller... I enjoy long walks on the beach and power tools
I'd like to pick your collective minds, to learn solutions to finishing rosewood.
A few years ago I reclaimed some rosewood from an old 'head master's desk', which I now plan to use.
I'm planning make a few jewelery boxes... since this is a 'rich' timber, i plan to go all out (exotic) with design, build and features to do the timber the justice it deserves.
All idea's and suggestions are welcome....
Thanks in advance,
Kurt

Kurt,
I have only ever used nitrocellulose lacquer over rosewood, because I use this timber for furniture. Some Rosewood is oily, and some is not.
The oily/resinous material needs care with gluing (the newer PU glues have worked very well for me). However, I have never had a problem with NC sanding sealers or lacquer finishes over Rosewood.
I am still something of a novice, but find NC lacquer a very easy finish to apply, as well as being very forgiving (easy to fix if I foul up).

The item in the pic is Rosewood. The top was very oily/resinous, but it finished very well.
Cheerio!

Probably a good idea to clarify what you mean by Rosewood. Are you meaning the Aussie stuff or one of the exotic tropical versions?
Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.
