Looking for old barbed wire

Has anyone any rusty old barbed wire lying around they don't need? I'm after about 40 metres. I've previously found a few metres half buried in sand which was a thicker gauage than what's around now, it also seemed to be made of better steel than the new stuff. I don't mind how rusty it is, even if it's deteriorated to th point of being able to be broken by hand.

There are plenty of old farm dumps around here with it in. Bit hard to put into post tho.

There are two types of barbed wire. The old style is made from soft steel and is, I think called "Iowa" pattern while the modern wire is high tensile and of a thinner gauge, although it has a higher breaking strain (when new). The soft wire may still be available new, but I am sure if you called in at almost any farm they would have some old wire lying around that you could use.

Thanks cookie aand Bushmiller thanks for explaining the difference in wire, Im definately after the old stuff the more pitted with rust the better...to a degree, I'm guessing I'll have to go down a long driveway or two

Hey Spring...if you have trouble getting some rusty wire...toss some new stuff in a fire it'll rust in no time..(a bit of vinegar will speed it up a bit too)

Soprry about that Toggy, I just left it that way when I was in between addresses, your're right, would have been handy in this situation I live in Somers, near Westernport Bay, Victoria. By the way, you being from Kyabram, have you heard of a bloke called John Anderson who was born in Kyabram? He was a poet and wrote of the decline of a "gum" he called a "dida" gum, do you know what a "dida" gum is?

never heard of John Anderson; but being into poetry would have meant that I steered clear of him. Poetry & the arts are not high on my list of priorities. As to the 'dida' gum; NFI. Some poets seem to live in fairy land, so may be a figment of his imagination.

How much barbed wire do you need, and when. I have about 400 metres of genuine ungalvanised and annealed to be available in the near future. The truth of the matter is that a couple of years ago (3/12) to be exact the hay press caught on fire and burnt it, about 10 acres as well as getting into 2 neighbours porperties. Singed the ancient boundary fence pretty well so it has to be replaced.

I need 40 metres or so thanks Ken but I'd take the lot if it's in your way, as long as it could fit into a car boot and/or the back seat. I can't see myself getting up to Kyabram this year, it's possible but mid/late January or Febuary seems more possible at the moment. I don't mind taking the wire off if it's still fixed if that helps?

The fence is still sort of standing. I will make some enquiries with the fencer as to when he can put up the replacement; and start dismantling the old one. Just have to work out how to keep the neighbours big black grass rats out.
I would not be putting this anywhere near the back seat of a car. It will shred several pairs of heavy leather gloves just dismantling; so imagine what it will do to upholstery.
I have 2 kids down that way; Rosebud and Tyabb, so we will work something out.

Maybe we could set some up outside the front door of 's shed.
