barking at shadows
after the minor brouhaha in the pallet challenge I thought I'd better post the WIP pics for the shadow piece
I'll post the second one first because (after the call for a swab) I documented it much better
it's simple really (our art teacher back in year 9 showed us how to do them),
first you'll need to draw or print the silhouette you want to do, (mostly I've done profile portraits of friends)
then in a darkened room you shine a light at it (a small spot works best)
then in between the light and the printed copy you hot glue a little structure or scaffold that will support the thing that casts the shadow.
the structure and the shadow of whatever you hot glue to it just has to remain within the boundaries of the silhouette, ( make sense sofar )
the pics here are not taken in situ and I've had to move the piece closer to the copy to show whats happening,
pic three shows a side view mid construction,
remember, it is meant to deceive the eye, so the idea is to add as much superfluous material as possible as long as it stays within the boundries of the shadow,
the last pic shows the front/back veiw,
for some reason I had to take the shot from about 5 mtrs away before the parts would line up, odd, because the shadow casts from about 700 mm
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Love your work Underfoot.
Congrats on a well deserved placing in the challenge. I might even have a go at this.

when taking the pic for the entry ( and to further confuse) a spot light was casting the shadow and a side lamp was lighting the object
the last pics show some wips of the original thinker which I spent more time on and took less pics of ( got sick of taking it outside to photograph then having to line it all up again)
anyways, thats it then, try it at home.its fiddly but fun
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Well I believed it right from the start, but now I know how to do it. Thanks for the info.

Ahhh... so the scepticism was your own fault!
I gotta admit I was a fence-sitter, I thought 'twas possible but was leaning towards the "practical joke" side of the fence because of the shadows.
Nice to see that the claims of doping proved unfounded.
I'm surprised that Wongo hasn't already pinched it for his avatar.

I ended up thinking that it would be harder to fake than to make a real one.

... and now we'll see which ones of the skeptics have the ***** to admit they were wrong...
Technically, I was right about the shadow after all: it is not originally from the sticks, it is originally from Rodin's statue, isn't it?
