Many years ago I salvaged some old red cedar that was being thrown out after a government office refit. I made a coffee table out of it and oil finished it. It has bee refinished many times since; after the grand kids have gone home, or after a party. I bought some Ubeaut hard shellac at a wood show some time ago and have had great success with it on small items, so I want to try it in the table top. I sanded right back to cut off the dead, faded surface wood, steamed out all the indentations I could, re sanded down to a 1200 finish and applied a first coat of hard shellac with a polishing rubber. The finish wasn't too even in colour, so I sanded it back heavily. It is now as smooth as glass, but still with some uneven colour patches. Should I sand it back more to try and remove these, or will the next coat of hard shellac soak in enough to even them out? Alternatively, I could leave the surface as it is and wax it with Mirowax or Black Bison?
