Had a look at the picture rails in an old weatherboard, they have come away from the wall in some places. I took one down and noticed that there was some brown glue (mastic I think) and scraped it off before attaching it again. Found the studs difficult to find as I was attaching to a lath and plaster wall but did my best and found that as I tried to nail the last nail the rail sprung out where I had previously nailed and so again there's gaps. Tried another picture rail and virtually the same experience, I now understand why previous owner had used glue. Took it down again, cut it a little shorter (thinking that the extra length may have contributed to the springiness) but same thing happened . Any ideas why this is happening and why a simple job turns out to be so difficult?
