ceiling access panel - non-standard joist spacing
I'm planning to put insulation (batts) in my north-facing kitchen and storage room ceilings. These areas are part of a lean-to with a low pitched tin roof. There is a manhole in the kitchen with enough crawling space in the roof for me to get batts in fairly well, but the storage room has an obstructing beam (and it'd probably be too far to crawl/maneouvre happily).
So, other than taking off weatherboards at the other end of the lean-to to access the roofspace, I would have to put in an access panel in the storage room. The ceiling is old plasterboard. However, the joist spacing appears to be about 670mm which makes the typical 600mm access panels too small. Can I use this sort of panel and attach timber to a joist to pad out the difference? Or should I put in headers (?terminology - timber pieces running between the two joists along each side of the access panel)?
