Recover from polyurethane lifting stain.

I have been staining a radiata pine bookshelf with Mahogany spirit based stain. An hour after I applied the stain, I coated the timber with 50/50 Cabothane satin polyU /turps, and a few patches of stain lifted on the front long edge (19mm wide) of a shelf ( not the end grain, but longitudinal edge).

I had sanded this edge with 240 grit paper.

Anyway, I have this nice red/black stained timber with white patches on the front edges.

any suggestions as to how to recover this situation would be gratefully received.

Rough the area up so it will take up the stain and not sit on the surface.

LET IT DRY! stain can take a long time to dry ( 1 to 2 days )

I second what jr french said it needs time to dry for sure.

Your other option is to use a non compatible stain or dye. Water based for poly won't pull out of the timber because it isn't compatible and won't be melted back off into the finish. Oil based stain will come off if it isn't allowed to dry fully (at least 24 hours)
