I have just finished "carving" a Red gum burl with an Arbortech cutter (first time). I have applied a textured finish to the inner bowl with a twisted wire brush in an angle grinder, and a highly sanded finish to a 70mm curved lip. The underneath of the bowl I hand-wire brushed to remove grey oxidizing, loose weak parts and seeds/critters from the grooves. I decided to treat the deep grooves, pits and cracks with a satin lacquer for a degree of cleanliness and discouragement to future bugs moving in and setting up home.
My decision to cover the remaining surfaces with wax leads to the question of what type and how to apply.<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />
I am thinking of melting and brushing or spraying some bees wax mixed with a softer, quality furniture wax and even out the distribution with a hair dryer/heat gun finally, when cold and hardened, brushing the textured surfaces and cloth rubbing the smoother surfaces.
Any advice, suggestions and criticisms welcomed.
