Finishing for a Park Bench
Hiya Folks
SWMBO has decided on a park bench seat for the front verandah. Standard type of thing.
She wants it to age (go grey). So far no problem - build it, sit it outside and let nature take its course.
At this stage I am going to use red gum for the entire project as it is a nice outdoor hard wearing timber that will grey over time and give her the desired look.
Here is the question:
Should i finish it after it has greyed out? If so, then with what?
thanks in advance
regards

Personally I wouldn't finish it after it has greyed off. Any oil finish on the grey would make it go a really dark colour.
If it is protected under the veranda it may take some time to grey offNow proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

I agree no finish after it goes grey. Does she know how long it will take to go grey.

On a different tack, I have also been encouraged to do a park bench which will be naturally weathered.
Will it be a bespoke plan that you are using, or a regular internet/book one? I am looking for ideas!

Thanks for the feedback folks.
Bench is just a generic bench - I guess when she sees one she likes she will tell me
I will make some plans up at that point.
For weathering time - once it is built, not much she can do but wait. Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can? -- Sun Tzu

If she's in a hurry for the weathered look you can use potassium dichromate, dangerous stuff so be careful if you choose to use it. http://www.shellac.net/Dichromate-Tannin.html

I think this is a perfect case of what she doesn't know can't (won't) hurt me.
