I didn't want to hijack the other thread.

Today the president of the NRA (National Rifle Association) held a press conference.

He said, basically, "The way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." He is advocating armed guards at all public schools. Is this a way to start a war in our schools? I just don't understand the logic.

I am not against guns. I have a couple myself.

I can say this, I'm not smart enough to know what a solution would be. I do know that magazines holding 30 to 100 rounds are NOT the answer. Also it is possible to purchase conversion parts for the AR-15 to convert it to a full automatic. AND, the stupidity of the laws make selling the conversion parts legal. It's illegal to own the converted gun but not the parts.

Back then all non citizen aliens were required to register with the government. It was a simple postal card thing. Not really relevant except that RFK was shot with a registered gun by a registered alien. It is a demonstration of how well registration works.

On the contrary Rich, personally, I would love it if you would give some input into the debate. All the discussion at the moment is coming from Australians and we need some first hand input into the American attitude toward guns.

I thinks its more of how much money does the NRA give to the 2 parties to do their bidding. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

What you need to worry about John is what companies do deals here with our politicians to do their bidding.
I think smorgans gave 150,000 to labour and 50,000 to liberal about 10 years ago.
How much are mining companies giving so they can get rights to mine wherever etc.
and all the rest.

How much a bunch or liars are the worlds politicians. The US is hunting down Asange for telling you......

Assume wages of $45,000pa for each armed guard, one per school, call it $90k a year to include all the overheads, training, sick leave and all the other employee costs.

I make that $11.7 billion dollars a year, or assuming the NRA has a membership of 5 million, $2,300 per member.

So are the NRA going to fund it?

It also made the point that there was a deputy sheriff on duty, armed and there to prevent these type of events when Harris and Kleebold went to Columbine High School in 1999.

I read something somewhere recently (I don't think it was on this forum) about how successful John Howard's gun buyback scheme was. I cant remember all the details but apparently what has happened is that membership of legal gun groups, like the sporting shooters association, has increased dramatically. Membership allows members to buy guns. There have been more guns imported and sold in Australia than were removed from circulation in the buyback.

So a decade and a half later and we are worse off than we were before the buyback, which we all paid for, so what was the point?

I'm more than likely wrong on the number but the US has 32,000 gun related deaths a year, Australia has something like 50 a year.
Some ridiculously high figure.
I can't understand how the population there can just ignore it (they don't but the NRA help control Gov't)

I guess if its not anyone you know it doesn't matter.

Maybe they need stickers for their cars like we had here for the road toll.

These are questions all thinking voters should be asking? Here in Qld a hell of a lot of people are now asking why they voted for the current government, even their mining company patrons are jumping ship! I think we have laws about deceptive & missleading conduct.

I have to agree on the original statement - beggars belief that the solution is more guys with guns. What happens when one of the armed guard good guys with guns goes bad???????? A "squeaky clean" guy with a gun?????

(& fwiw I'm apollitical - best man for the job & no party politics - utopia never happen unless we make it happen)
