Default Non-toxic finish for external use

I am about to make some cages for the guinea pigs. Can anyone suggest a good finish to use outdoors that won't kill the animals if they gnaw on it? I know that shellac is non-toxic. How does it go as an exterior finish?

    Thanks

    Peter
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Try "Pure" Tung oil. Not the prorietary blends which are toxic. Might need maintenance coats from time to time. But still it's only a guinea pig house. I don't imagine an architect designed it.

Non toxic actually means contains less than 20% solvents {which are very toxic)

    Use Cabot's External Clear Gloss.
Its inert once properly dry as are most solvent paints

Yeah, it's inert unless you eat it. Contains isocyanates. Every bit as nasty as it sounds.
