OK guys, I'm just about through with being called sir or bro :mad: , how I need a hardener (my fingernails are just fine thankyou!!!!) or how to put a look of sheer delight on her face!!
My OE inbox is being bombarded with this cr@p! My blocked senders list is brimming, but it comes from a different address each time ... how do I avoid receiving this stuff? I mean if it were useful to me, but ..... hardly!

1. Start using Thunderbird (www.mozilla.com)
2. Turn on Thunderbird's built in spam learning filter
3. Be diligent - don't delete spam, but tell Thunderbird what is, and what isn't. It will learn very quickly.

If you need a more comprehensive instruction manual, pm me, and I'll email you one that I wrote for the staff at Monash Uni (I'm an IT instructor there).

I think I get maybe 1-3 bits of spam a week in my Inbox now. (I probably receive over 100, so 1% isn't too bad).

You need 3rd party spam control, ie another program that has it's own spam list. Something like MailMarshal, or PcCillin Internet security suite, or other program. None of these will prevent it coming in, but they do mark it as spam and you can then put a rule in to auto move it to a spam folder. A quick glance through the folder to make sure nothing got trapped by mistake, then bulk delete the lot. It makes your inbox much more workable.

1 Whatever anti virus you are using isn't doing its job , I use Vet and it stops 99% of this crap
2 Change your e-mail address and be carefull who you give it to, i believe ( & will proberly be wrong )that with hotmail you can make it that you only recieve e-mails from those in your address book

Thunderbird's filter is as good as 3rd party spam filtering, and it will either mark, mark and move to another folder, or simply delete, depending on your preferences.

Thunderbird is also free - why pay?

you need to rumage around a bit within OE's Tools and Rules.
I've got rules that delete from the Server (ie I never even see it) messages containing certain words in the subject line or message body.
This works for most of the really offensive crap

I use yahoo web base email - which can operate through Outlook Express.
Though I haven't bothered doing that.
Its got effective spam filters etc built in.
Its got inbuilt virus checking of messages and attachments.

I always check the junkbox before I delete anything as occasionally
(not often) it traps something I should have received

So I get a little bit of junk but not much.

I actually run IE6, Firefox and Opera, each set to a different webmail home page.

Spambayes is a free program that works with Microsoft Outlook to filter out spam e-mail.

I've found it works quite well. The program learns in much the same way as the Thunderbird application that Stuart mentions. If something ends up in your mailbox that is spam you tell Spambayes that it is spam and it learns from this and refines its filtering for next time.

Only a handful of close friends have my bigpond email address and I haven't had any problems until just recently.
Russell, I have Vet AV, seems I'd be busy without it
I downloaded Thunderbird, chose not to transfer details from OE (der!) and couldn't get the box back no matter how many times I reinstalled it ... so have downloaded SpamBayes (thanks Mirboo ) ... will see how that performs.

I use hotmail and the google pack and it works for me. I also have a bigpond e-mail address and it is alway full of the most ridiculos cr3p on earth. If you want to filter anything, bigpond hammers you for a prenium. You wonder why you get spammed??

That's why I never recommend anyone sign up with Bigpond. On one person's system I know who did, I helped out deal with the spam - I have never seen so much, and to a new level of unacceptability in the content as well. And they have the audacity to charge to turn on their spam filter!

Judi do you have the vet internet security suite or just the anti virus In the suite there is an Anti -spam bit as well and this stops those e-mails

I use Incredimail with a built-in spam filter much like Stuart recommends in Thunderbird. Just the last week or so I';m getting an email which gets through the block. I got a Viagr* one today. Always a different sender. Hopefully this will stop soon but I've found that since I stopped bouncing this crap, I get less odf it.

Just make sure you don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. One of my client's applications sends out an email containing a link to his site. This is a service people are paying for, not spam. A number of them have reported that the email hasn't arrived - usually because it has been blocked by a spam filter on a corporate network. Of course the first thing they do is blame us for not sending it properly. Then you ask them about spam filters. Oh yeah...

I have no filtering of any sort on my email. I'd prefer to decide which emails I read and which ones I don't by myself. I have a little morning ritual which involves scanning through my inbox and highlighting all of the spam, then I click the magic Delete button. It's not worth getting stressed over because it's here to stay - no sooner do you add some rule to your filter than someone finds a sneaky new way of spelling Viagra. I reckon the best solution is to just not lose any sleep over it.

I am with Silent. It takes about 5 minutes to delete the junk but sometimes Outlook puts some emails in the Junk Folder which is ligit so by just looking at them I can just delete them as required.

As someone said most of the pharmacetical, software, penis enlargement, and fake swiss watches ones have a different email address every time so it is no good putting them in the blocked senders list.

Some where I read it is better not to unsubscribe from some of these ones that have an unsubscribe link as they then know it is a genuine email address and then you just get more spam.

As far as that Govt. site spam matters goes I think they are a toothless tiger. Most of the spam comes from overseas any way so they can't do any thing about it.

All the ebay and paypal ones I just send to [email protected] or [email protected]
