Default Box Hill RSL GTGs 2019

10 members met in the RSL lounge on Monday 26th November. As the last Monday in December, was NYE we decided that the next get-together at the RSL would be Monday 25th February 2019. January 28th would clash with DaveTTC’s “Whatcha dooen in Dooen” GTG over the Australia Day long weekend. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f303/...weekend-218153.

The November meeting commenced with a review of our activities during 2018 and some discussion on possible activities for 2019. During 2018, Matt (simplicity) and Doug (doug3030) hosted GTGs in their “sheds” which were well attended and appreciated. Both have indicated that they would be willing to do so again this year. “Show and tell” features prominently at all GTGs where some attendees will show off their latest projects – Dale (DSEL74) bought along a collection of miniature brass anvils which he had molded and cast / forged; Peter (sturdee) has been turning miniature lighthouses; and of course the is the inevitable display of pens which results in an enthusiastic discussion on the “best” finish- CA, oil, wax or some favorite recipe.

Members also have an eclectic mix of interests outside of woodworking including knife making; vintage tool collecting; handsaw making, restoration and sharpening; metal working, and photography to mention few. And there is always time to just “chew the fat” and enjoy the company of others with similar interests.

A number of potential objectives for 2019 were discussed at the November meeting:

    • Increase the number of members
    • Become more inclusive with more ladies and members from the other sub-groups within the wood working forums
    • Joint activities with the metal working forums
    • Visit(s) to suppliers including demonstration of products, tools etc. - e.g. Ubeaut, CWS, Pop’s Shed, Carbatec, Hare & Forbes
    • Appoint a “leader” for each meeting at the RSL who will be responsible for defining a theme for the evening and ‘advertising’ the event to ensure that more members are aware of our activities.
    • Arrange additional “member’s shed” activities where members can demonstrate / show off their equipment, tools and projects.

So while we rest and relax and recover from the excesses of the Christmas dinner and NYE activities, can I ask you to reflect on whether you would be interested in joining our meetings? Some members meet before the meeting for a meal in the RSL dining room. Wives, husbands, partners, girlfriends, boyfriends, concubines, mistresses, etc. are welcome – although we ask that you limit yourself to bringing just one of the above to any one function.

We meet at 7.00pm (6.00ish if having a meal first) on the last Monday of the month and generally end up by around 9 -9.30pm.

Venue: RSL, 26 -28 Nelson Rd, Box Hill Vic 3128.

I'm in Melb at the moment staying at East Ivanhoe (mainly but also short stints at Tooradin) till Jan 25 then heading north again.

I know no meetings are scheduled, but if anyone would like to catch up over dinner, at the RSL or some where else, let me know on 0417 782 204. I'm busy looking after my mother till ~2pm but free most arvo's and nights

Thanks for the offer Neil - I'm in.

How about Monday, 21st January at Box Hill RSL at 7.00pm? (Have spoken to Neil and he is good for the 21st so put in your diary)

We all know of Neil's expertise in pen making and creating and turning resin blanks. But there is more to his talent repertoire! When I first met Neil some 10 years ago, I was receiving some tuition from a notable tutor who should remain nameless, lest we spoil his reputation. I was trying to learn to use a Woodcut hollowing tool when Neil walked in, took one look at what we were doing, and announced " Don't you idiots know you have the tool upside down?"

Please advise if you will be able to attend on the 21st and whether you want to join us at 6.00pm for dinner before the GTG. As a suggestion, if you have any examples of resin casting or pen turning (or in my case a combination of both) which you would like Neil's advice on, please let us know and bring the item along on the 21st.

This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best - so don't let the opportunity pass by.

Sally and I will be there.

Sounds like a good night should I bring my current saw making attempt.?
Or should we leave the theme pen and casting.?

For those wanting to attend for dinner ,let me know via PM or my mobile number at least 24 hours before and we will book the table.

Please try to make it at least 24 hours for dinner bookings not 24 minutes as some have done in the past.

    Cheers Matt.
Also a big thank you to OLD GREY BEARD for getting this all up and running for 2019.

Simone has her basketball on a Wednesday night now, so Mondays are back in the cards!!

I'll mark it on the calendar (once we get a '19 one)
I may even bring a pen or two ....

    Should be a hoot!

I suggest we keep "pens and casting" as the main theme, but I can't think of any reason to not have "show and tell" if time permits.

FOR THOSE WANTING TO ATTEND FOR DINNER LET ME KNOW VIA “PM or my mobile number” at least 24 hours before.

If you write your attending in the main thread it gets lost.

Ummmm am I missing something? I thought it was going to be the 21st.

Monday night coming is the 14th.

Can we get some confirmation on which it is?
