Smile Shortening the width of roller blinds

We have been given some great block out roller blinds but they are too wide for the window area. Does anyone know if there is a service to shorten roller blinds width wise?? I have tried Accent and a couple of other blind companies but they won't do it because we didn't get the blinds from them. Or can you DIY with the right tools? Husband is a mechanical engineer so handy with the tools - we just need to know where to start and if they can be shortened in width once they are already made?
    Thanks

    Hi mhills

Welcome to the forum. Holland or Roller blinds can be made narrower with a couple of provisos.

You need to take the pin end off the roller to see how far the mechanism comes down the roller because this will determine how much you can cut off the roller.

If the fabric does not have a seam on the side there should be no problem cutting the fabric and this can be done with a pair of sharp scissors.

If there is a seam on the side you will need to cut it so as to allow for the seam because if you don't put a seam on it the blind will roll up unevenly. This is usually better sewn with an over-lock machine.

Usually with some block out materials they don't need a seam because the wont fray whereas others will fray. That is something you will have to determine yourself.

Failing that depending on where you live look around for a small independent blind manufacturer. They will usually do a job like that for labour costs only.
