Red Lacquer
A friend and I have decided that our church needs a new cross to replace the current treated pine one. He has someone to make the cross out of speckleback (I haven't heard of it but there's a lot I don't know...).
My friend, being a whiz with wrought iron will be making a vine which will double as a holder as the cross will need to be put away because we use the school hall.
Anyway, I put my hand up to do the finishing and we've envisaged a nice deep red lacquer as in those carved chinese chests.
Any advice on achieving the finish would be appreciated.Last edited by RETIRED; 17th November 2004 at 06:37 AM. Reason: So as the blind ones amongst us can read it :-)

You can use shellac coloured with universal tint to get the colour you require. Works a treat is easy to apply and looks great.
