Default Help with Oregon Pine Dining room table!

    Hi everyone,

I was hoping to get some advise on this forum. I recently made a dining room table from Oregon Pine but I have no experience on finishing it off (stain, vanish, etc). Any help and advise on my options would be appreciated. At the moment, the table isn't really usable because we are afraid of spilling something on it etc. Also, if you rub your fingers/arms in the wrong place you will get a splinter under the flesh. I was wondering what my options are if I want to keep its natural color and what my options are if I wanted it darker? Also, I am from South Africa and we dont have all the nice products you get overseas, so I might be limited in what I can do.

    Thanks in advance.

Personally I would use some sort of poly based finish. I expect that it will darken a little.

I have used water based poly that left an almost natural finish but this was not on table.

I have tried u beaut hard shellac on a table that I just finished. It takes about a week before it fully cures.

Firstly, Hi and welcome to the forum.

I have just built and outdoor table from recycled oregon. Yes it is prone to producing some nice splinters.

The table was finished with a furniture oil and carnuba wax. Client was told to watch for splinters and deal with them accordingly.

Since it's a dining room table I would be going down the same path as Christos has said and use a had coating (poly finish) that doesn't allow the slinters to lift up and get you.

Shellac would be nice but it's not going to stop the splinters for coming up unless you want to apply 30+ coats of shellac.
