Melamine/ whiteboard

I wish to make a cabinet out of Melamine, but I wish to have a different finish to the plain white, if I gave the melamine a sanding would it hold a painted finish, eg. sealer undercoat and Enamel paint finish.

White Knight make a laminate paint that works pretty well. Use their laminate cleaner prior to painting.

Hi, I've found melamine can stain fairly easily, so I'd guess it could accept a painted finish, but I'd degloss it by scuffing first, possibly just with a decent fine scotchbrite scourer pad, and then I'd wipe some ESP by Flood company (Easy Surface Prep) over it.(Follow the instructions on the can).

After that, straight enamel should be fine without an undercoat.

Hi i manufacture mdf kitchen doors and panels using mdf white board and finish in polyurethane the first thing to think about is board finish whether satin/velvet or stipple . firstly You need to take the gloss of the board to give the primer something to grab onto ,I use 120 grit but prime board with a high fill polyester primer (polyester will stick and hold on ) only problem is short pot life approx 1 hr ,Then we sand with 320 and 400 for high gloss finishes

Hmmm well, either one of those 2 suggestions is worth contemplating. What kind of cabinet is this? If you expect it to take wear and tear, then I'd lean towards the ESP but with oil undercoat, as this is actually still recommended. The tile and laminate paint for my money is a more expensive way of actually achieving much the same result and limiting your possible colour in the finish more too.

If you are making something large enough to justify a whole sheet, just buy one of the coloured melamine sheets - they are about three times the cost of white, but you dont have to buy paint, undercoat and so on.

Hey there,

Why go through all the hassles of prepping and painting Melamine when a sheet of MDF wouldn't need as much prepping and will only need an undercoat and then a gloss finish.
