Default WOODWORKING QUIZ for 30 Sept 04

    Good Evening Friends,
I've read the recommendation to use gloss varnish for the first coat of finish, followed by satin for the final coat.

What is the theory behind this sequence?

    Respectfully,

In my house it's to get rid of the left over gloss without having to pay for an undercoat.

    cheers,

Default WOODWORKING QUIZ ANSWER for 30 Sept 04

    Good Evening Friends,
Satin varnish has tiny flakes of flattening agents- silica in many cases - and these bits of matter possess a couple of characteristics that you don't want in your base coats; When you start with gloss varnish you create a base for the satin topcoat, and retain clarity.

    Thank you for your support.

    Respectfully,
