Woodfast wood lathe 1980 Ausralian made
This is an older, 1980’s Australian made cast iron long bed lathe. 30X3.5mm spindle size, 155mm center height and 1200mm bed length, 415v 3 phase 3hp. motor. It has been dismantled for restoration. This lathe will require cleaning and repainting. As can be seen in the pictures the surface rust removes easily to reveal the quality cast iron bed. Once reassembled with a new drive belt, new switch gear and wiring this will be a wonderful lathe. It comes with a tailstock, assorted tool rests, banjo, tail stock center and a cup chuck.

To be honest, I'm surprised no one has snapped it up yet. The price is very fair, they're a good lathe, and with a three phase motor, it only needs a VFD to provide valuable speed control.

I see that the current motor is 3/4HP, and I would recommend a 1.5HP (or more) if going the VFD route. But be careful that whatever motor you choose will fit in the space and will fit (or be easily altered to fit) the support platform. Also, I kept all of the pulleys (even though I only use 2) so had to make sure the pulleys would fit on the shaft of the new motor. Prices vary considerably, but I chose to pay more to deal with a local supplier as I knew I would need assistance in the set up and programming. All up cost for the VFD and a brand new 240v 1.5HP motor was just over $500. A second hand motor and much cheaper FVD would probably be around half of that. Would I do it again? You betcha! The lathe is a dream to use and is miles ahead of my two previous lathes. I suggest that you check out "VFDs for Newbies" by forum member BobL - a wealth of good practical information and tips. Was it difficult? Not as hard as expected, and with some help from the supplier this non-technical minded retired bean counter got it up and running.
