Queen Bed to Day Bed WIP
In reference to my previous post about recycling furniture......https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/pi...i-have-179044/
I decided to convert the Queen Bed Suite into a Day Bed for the deck area.
Queen 2.jpgQueen.jpg
I had to break up a tile which was a feature of the bed ends in order for me to cut the end in half. These will be used as the sides of the Day Bed
Queen 4.jpgQueen 5.jpg
I still have to drop the leg height of the back but I think you can get the idea of what I am aiming for...I still have to manufacture and stain legs for the front of the sides.

More work to be done next week end......

Thanks Frank...I like it....enjoying the process.
Even doing the logistics of size of base for available mattresses.
It will give us a Day Bed about the size of a King Single bed. I have seen Day Beds where you can not lie down flat and have to tuck your legs up. With this one I can have a break on the deck after a day in the shed.

skot, I remember your last post when I cast some doubt on the sort of timber you are working with. In these pics I can see it is Radiata Pine with a 'cedar' finish over the top. That is still fine for your project, but I can forsee problems in trying to match a factory finish with what you can do at home. One suggestion I might make to keep it a little easier, is to turn the sides around so that the legs are at the front of the construction. The legs on the back are not exactly in the corners but should be close enough for it still to be stable. That should save you making up new legs and having to match them. Is that of any help?

barraboy,
You are right about the timber...It is stained pine...I was way out.
The stain is written on the underside of the pieces......English Oak stain.
First idea was for the cut ends of the sides and attach them to the back but that made the overall length about 1.6m which means you have to tuck you legs up when lying down.....I will still have to make 2 extra legs as the sides need to be out from the back to give me a good length -2.0m for stretching out

Thanks for the comments. I tried to recycle as much as possible.
The slats for the base are kwila decking boards left over from our deck area I built back in 2006
I am very happy with the result.
4 coats of Cabots Cedar Stain & Varnish on the raw timber and 1 coat on the finished parts to get the colours matching....finally finished with Marine grade exterior poly for gloss & protection.

To pun a phrase "#### hot Skot" turned out to be a fantastic bit of furniture.

OK, I put wheels on it for easy moving around when I need to clean the deck. It is all assembled at home in the entertainment area....stained some pine button plugs to hide the screws that fix the arms to the back.

It is as solid as a rock and waiting for mattress & scatter cushions ....will be ready this week. Then it's time to rest with a beer

That's a nice use of something that would otherwise be useless for anything else other than a bed. I congratulate you on matching the stain.
