How to re-calibrate my Thread Dial Indicator
Hi guys,
My thread dial indicator is held onto the apron by an allen key, which is fine, This is still attached, but the phillips head screw that holds the number gauge on the dial indicator became lose (see image), and spins freely. This needs to be nipped up however, surely there is a way to calibrate this. I can tighten it up on any number (or any non number)
How do I ensure that when I tighten it up it is on a full thread.
Does that even make sense?
I was thinking that I should wind the apron back to the start of the carriage, engage the half nut and after 1 inch of travel, it will be on a full number...? However I am unsure.

As long as it didnt come loose during threading it doesnt matter.
Tighten it up and you're good to go.

It was lose during the threading, ultimately that tread is done for, which is ok I can make another.
I was hoping that would be the answer but unsure.

Thinking about it some more it might be an idea to close the half nuts and then line one of the graduations up with the 0 mark. Just so you arent closing the nuts on the top of the threads.

The little metal indicator on mine fell off and since I have lost it. Recently I have just used a whiteboard maker to indicate the line. That way I can mark it anywhere I want at the start.

Tighten screw on dial.
Engage half nuts on a number you want with tool clear of thread.
Stop half way along cut thread.
Adjust topslide to pickup existing thread and check depth.
Disengage half nuts.
Go back to cutting thread again.
Unless your loose gauge had you cutting the crest off the thread.
I nearly always cut thread threads leaving halfnuts engaged and reversing chuck.
No starting error for lead of thread that way.
