Cellar ladder riser height
I'm finally building the ladder down into my cellar and wanted to confirm whether there is a maximum height between steps. The Plans show a "cellar ladder" and the hole in the floor is too small to allow a proper set of stairs going down.
As far as I can tell I don't have to comply with the relevant standard for stairs as it is not a regularly used room (although the ceiling height of around 2.4m would enable it to class as "habitable") and I've angled to permit the 2.0m head height . Therefore I understand AS1657 for the construction of "ladders" would be the main thing to comply with.
So my question is whether there is any requirement for the tread spacing / rises? I originally used the Blocklayer calculator and for the overall rise I would have needed 14 rises of 187.9. This seemed very difficult on the steeper slope I'm working with and when compared to my step ladder which has a rise of around 300mm .
I'm now looking at doing 12 rises of 219mm.
Should this be ok?
Thanks
hj
