1972 Dyco Bandsaw - Need to replace tyres.
Hi everyone.
I have recently started work as a primary school technology teacher here in Christchurch New Zealand and in our workshop we have an old 1972 Dyco bandsaw that needs its wheel tires replaced. Can anyone tell me the best place to obtain new tires ? It's pretty confusing as a local tool/machinery store put me onto a conveyor belt company that can make up some custom made tires but then after doing research on the net I see that you can just buy ready made ones that look fairly easy to fit. I see there are either rubber or polyurethane ones. The school holidays have started and today I took the wheels off the machine so I can take them into this firm on Monday. There are 3 wheels, 2 are 12inch (300mm) in dia and 1 is 10inch (250mm) in dia. Each wheel has raised edges on the rim about 1.5mm high and the width between those raised edges is 7/8 inch (22mm). What would be the best thing to do, get this local firm to make up some tires or should I buy some ready made ones on line and fit them myself? I would be thankful for any help at all.

Hi,
a useful thread for you as it gives the address of the Dyco factory in Auckland (hopefully they are still there as this thread is dated 2005)
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f27/bandsaw-wheels-22445/
On the other hand, at the end they give a link to another thread showing how to make bandsaw tyres out of old car inner tubes.
Good luck with the Dyco - surely the school can see the way to replacing it as it is over 40 years old.

Found Dyco International Ltd
Hi Paul and thanks for the information.
I had read that thread and had tried and failed to locate the Dyco company but after reading your reply I tried again and now think I have succeeded. They do appear to still exist and are a family owned business located in Auckland called Dyco International Ltd. They started in 1946 and look like they are indeed the original manufacturers of our 1972 Dyco which is great so I will be calling them tomorrow to see what they recommend.
I have been thinking of ordering some polyurethane tires online from overseas as they are reasonably priced even considering the shipping and they look easy to fit. However, as far as I can tell, the Dyco wheels are not ‘crowned’ on the rim so the crown has to be on the tire itself and from what I can see the polyurethane tires are of uniform thickness across their width, ie not crowned. They are designed to conform to a crowned wheel. Also I have heard some negative things about them.

You can check on ebay. They have wide selection of band saw tires. I have aftermarket blue urethane tires that I ordered online (bandsawparts.com ) . It was easy because it was just shipped from Texas. If you're planning to buy overseas,it will surely take a while.

Hi Andy.
I am contemplating buying an old bandsaw exactly the same as yours, but it has exactly the same problem. Did you manage to source some new tyres? Also, what do you think of these bandsaws? They are obviously very solid and have a good throat size. Do you know what HP your motor is?

Masport Dyco BS350 Band Saw
Hi Andy,
I realise that this thread petered out some time back but having just bought an old Masport Dyco BS350 band saw which needs a bit of tuning, I wondered how you got on replacing the tyres on yours.
My unit is a bit more recent than your 1972 model, and I don't know where "Masport" came into the picture, but the plate on the table certainly says Dyco Industries Limited - did you have any luck tracking them down last year (now Dyco International I believe).
I would really appreciate any information an the company and/or their saws.
Regards

Hello,
I believe I have the same bandsaw you do, if you still have it, the BS350,
I was recently gifted it and would love to restore it but can't seem to track down any info on it or find an owner manual.
did you have any luck tracking down parts, or have a manual I could possibly ly get a copy of?
Much appreciate any help you are able to provide.
