Room Height Problem
Hi all looking for some advice. In the process of finishing a project started about 20 years ago. Can't rush these things. Discovered that the floor joists between ground floor living area and upstairs bedroom are only 2395 (from bottom edge) to slab. Obviously once floor in living area is tiled and the ceiling lined there will be even less clearance. The joists are 50 x 225 @ 450 centres spanning 4.5m. They sit on the top plate of the living room stud walls and the bedroom walls are on the same plane. Can I joist by joist cut a rebate about 45mm deep in the top end of each joist (so that the bottom plate of the stud wall above sits in the rebate) and pack underneath them or will this compromise the structural integrity of the joists?
