Nillo from the Hunter electorate

Good morning all,

Just waiting for the polls to open, so I can do my duty, (and avoid a fine) and thought I should try to get a little involved in something that interests me. (Is it just because I am getting older, or are politicians getting consistently worse, as time goes on?)

Anyway, I have found myself in a position of having more time to myself, a house to bring up to date, and most importantly, a shed to turn into my own version of a sawdust filled paradise, and I have come to realise that there are a lot of people out there, that know a lot of things, that I would like to know too.

I think that I have watched at least 50% of the on-line videos, and the ones that are left are getting a little repetitive or are just not that good, and I have found that there is too little information on Australian specific woodworking, especially in the area of material selection. I would like to do a little creating using locally sourced timber, but trial and error is a hard way to learn.

So far, I have constructed a work bench and a coffee table out of locally milled hardwood, and I have been very impressed with the way gravity holds my 2.5m long workbench firmly in place. The modern rustic coffee table rolls around on largish steel castors, and though I think it is a beautiful piece, it does leave a few deep furrows in the carpet.

My current project is the wooden framed bandsaw from the plans available on woodgears.ca but after I build that, I shall feel obliged to do something like rebuild my kitchen, or build myself a larger desk (or get rid of some of the stuff that is cluttering up the tiny one that I have now). Today's project though, is to reduce the scary old cubby house that I found in my backyard, into firewood, and to remove the lumps of concrete that have held it up for the last decade or so. Would anyone like some second hand post stirrups? Free, come with concrete, just dig a hole.....

Well, that weekend passed quickly, and now there is a bit of a gap in my backyard, that would seem to want something a little bit shed like. I have a rickety and leaky garden shed, that could easily fall down with the right amount of persuasion, only to be replaced with something a little bigger and more storage friendly to take some pressure off the number one shed. That could also take a few things out of my garage, and I could possibly fit a car in there then.

I have been for a look see, at the "shed" thread, and I have managed to draw a little inspiration from the Shed rules, especially the part about the number of works in progress I am supposed to have. Very few of mine, have made it past the contemplation stage, but there are a lot being contemplated. Where I live, the backyards seem to be an endless sea of colourbond, and mostly in that cream colour, and I am thinking that I might need something just a little different to break it all up a bit.

I have to say, that this does seem to be a very vast forum, and there are a lot of places that I can go to find information about a lot of subjects, but I think that I shall need to come back often to dig out the gems that I am looking for.
