Default What can I use a satellite dish for?

    Got one on the roof.
Can I refocus it to get anything worthwhile?

    Bob, I'm surprised.

Surely the bloke that brought the foilie to the forum would already be involved in the search for life outside the earth!

Maybe the SETI project could use it!

    Cheers,

will let you see what is able to be seen

Whether you can or not depends on dish, and electronics you have

See if you can focus it on Uranus.
Being so small it might be hard to pick it up, but worth a try anyway.
I hear their tv progs are good..

To get serious (?) if it is a small dish you can use it for K band but not C band, also depends upon the LNB and the polarity of the LNB.
You will need some idea of where to point it and a meter of some description to show that you are on track.
Dishes require absolute accuracy or you get nothing, half a degree out and you miss, if the polarity (vertical or horizontal) is wrong you get nothing.
Polarity is controlled by the LNB, some are fixed some are dual and are controlled by the voltage out from the decoder.
    There are also K & C banf LNB's at a price.
If it is an ex pay TV dish it will be a K band single polarity LNB.
The LNB is that little 'thing' that sits on the arm in the centre front of the dish.
Go and see Ian Anderson in Warrnambool, you can't miss the place, on the highway service lane opposite Harvey Norman with a big dish where the mail box should be, the place looks like a tip but he is the local guru on satelite.

you can hook a thing called a HUMAX box up to it, so long as you can find a card and you "should" be ablew to make it receive the following:

ABC +SBS TV in all states, meaning you can time-shift your viewing ie.a 7:30 programme in Melbourne can be watched at 8, 8:30 or 10:30 furing daylight savings as it is fed at 7:30 in each State.

Imparja TV, which has some commercial content fed to it.

    7 Central
    WIN TV
    GWN TV

and a bunch of radio stations

    Have fun

Steve, Humax is a brand, there are a lot of others on the market.
Melbourne Satellite have a lot and for Bob, Ian Anderson has a heap of options.
I think you are referring to the Optus free to air card, they cost about $100 and are a one off contribution but you need to show cause as to why you want one before they will activate it.
Travelling around the country in a motorhome is always a guaranteed one
