A massive overhaul like this at 120,000 miles I wonder how this compares with todays loco's, if i had these overhauls on my truck every 120k i would be broke.

Nice vid Mike. I don't think i'd have made a very good boiler inspector.....i wouldn't fit through the fire box door.....
I was lucky enough to have a wind up Hornby train set when i was a kid. It was passed down through the family, i think its with my young cousins in England now.1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

Two things come to mind when watching that..
Firstly how far we have come with things like tolerances and build quality... If anything only lasted 120 000 miles today between overhauls it would be considered "a certain asian country" rubbish..
Secondly back in those days you would certainly strive to get a university degree and get a professional job.... Who would want to work like those poor chaps had to... Compared to an equivalent worker of today where you have cranes and impact wrenches and pullers and WHS and PPE, all to make the job a lot lot easier and less hard on the body...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Was it really 120k miles between rebuilds? or between inspections? 120k miles is a rebuild every year if the locco did 328.76 miles a day.

Don't forget you have a very explosive pressure vessel rattling around on a chassis. I know I would want it checked. Also the conrods are massive lumps of steel being subjected to incredible forces at fairly high speeds.
