Default WOODWORKING QUIZ for 29 July 04

    Good Evening Friends,
When you build a bedroom over an unheated garage should you insulate the floor joists over the garage?

    Respectfully,

Not sure about USA (nor Oz, for that matter), but UK building regulations require that:
    1. The floor is insulated with fibreglass wadding between the joists
    2. The garage ceiling is lined with two layers of fireproof plasterboard (which is pink in colour - here anyway)
The first regulation is in respect to your question about heat retention, the second is due to it being a garage, which is likely to contain something (a car!) which may combust. Fireproof plasterboard will not prevent the bedroom burning, but allows for a 'reasonable time to exit' before the floor collapses.

    Here in Oz. No.

In any case Mr pedantic here says why insulate the joists, if one was to insulate the building you'd do it between the joists assuming they had sufficient lack of conductivity.

Maybe in REALLY cold places south of say Hobart you would?

Depends on 1. Where you live i.e. equator or south pole
    2. Who you sleep with
    3. How old you are
    4. How many dogs have you got

Is a 3 dog night down here right now. This could be the year of the snow on my bit of the south coast.
Insulate everything. 3 layers of pink batts on the bed.

It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

    Respectfully,
I'm just wondering whether this insulation is needed to protect the poor car in the garage from the noises generated within the bedroom above. Some cars can be very timid.

Default WOODWORKING QUIZ for 30 July 04

    Good Evening Friends,
Hexbaz, gave the answer I was looking for, congrats to you Hexbaz.

Any living structure or part of it must be protected from the weather as well as fumes from the car or vehicle that might be warming up by running especially in the south part of the land of OZ.

Thank you all for your support.

    Respectfully,
