Sealing Black Japan?
Hey all,
I have a project that I'm working on at the moment and would like some advise. I have used Black Japan to darken the wood but need to seal it before applying the finish. I have a store bought French Polish (can't remember brand name?) which I have used in the past but didn't particularly like. I also have the forum sponsors Sanding Sealer and Hard Shellac. Will either of the last two do the job of sealing the black japan or am I stuck with the French Polish. If more info is needed then please let me know.
TIA

If the FP is store brought and you've had it for a while you should probably throw it out as it is most likely way out of date. Mostof it's only good for max 12 mth.
You really don't need tp seal BJ as it is also a finish in it's own right. But white shellac will be fine so long as it's not past best by date.

Thanks for the reply Neil. I ended up using the Hard Shellac and didn't get any stain bleed so was very happy on that front. Glad that you have backed up what I went with
