    Default Lathe Accident

Operator was wearing gloves per company rules. Glove got caught. This was a metal lathe but a 1 or 2 HP wood lathe will do the same.

We all need to respect our machines & not get too complaisant.

That's pretty horrific. when I was an apprentice one of the other apprentices lost the top of his finger wearing gloves one a capstone lathe 3A etc, in production machining cast bronze. so he was spinning them on and off while running. the bronze was harsh on your fingers but not worth using gloves. I remember I used to put a bit of tape on the tip of my index finger and thumb fro that same reason but the machine I was using was stationary screwing parts on and off.
I try to dissuade guys I work with not to wear rings at work too for the same reason. For me it feels wrong when I start work if I have my ring on.

Paul have you posted this on the US sites like Wood Central? There has been a thread on WOW re wearing gloves they should see this photo - but they can't unless they register on WWF.

Bear in mind that this was a metal turning lathe.

Not trying to diminish it but metal lathes have a lot more torque than ours.

Because most of the work I do would shred the skin to the bone I have always worn gloves and long sleeves.

Don't put your hands past the tool rest unless the lathe is stopped.

Given the mess someone made of their hand,
the doctors have done a marvelous job of re-attaching it.

The colour is good so the blood flow is restored.

How useful it will be is another question.
There has been an awful lot of nerve damage.

ps - My daughter (now 17) was quite interested in it.
But she wants to be a doctor.

Nice job by the surgeons. I have photos of another metal lathe accident. Bigger lathe, about 600mm chuck, where the operator was wearing a loose jumper that got caught. The pictures are not pretty and the operator didn't survive. Any loose clothing or jewelery around rotating machinery is a to be avoided.
Those were the droids I was looking for.
