Kirchner 16" Jointer.
A while ago, I bought an old early 1920's Kirchner jointer which will be my 'forever' jointer (at my age, 'forever' doesn't seem that long ). I have started the process of stripping it down to the last nut and bolt, getting rid of the old paint which was flaking off and repainting. On the back off the fence, there is a mount and I have no idea what it's for. See attached pic. Does anyone know what it might be for?

I had a quick look online and from the pic's I found your pic looks like the one for sale in Germany, so you have an identical machine with the same missing part?
Pic's of your machine would be great to see.
I would say your machine is missing a sliding fence and looking at the bottom of the back of the main fence, I would say the sliding fence registered in the bottom rebate, so like your other jointer this sliding fence may have served the same purpose of stopping slim thickness stock from sliding under the gap in the main fence.

Hi again, Camelot. You're correct.....my machine is almost identical to this one but it's completely disassembled. So I used this machine for context. However, this mount appears to be for something that moves sideways on the reverse of the fence. I don't think that it relates to the rebate in the front at the bottom.
It'll be a while before I can post a pic of my machine. One of the bearing housings had a broken 'foot'. I having a new one cast. But here's a pic of it as at when I bought it.....

Your machine could be older, I got a pic from the front of that German machine and your fence is rounded at both ends where the German advertised one is square on the right side, does yours have the large quality 45 degree tilt mechanism seem on the rear pic of the German advertised one?
Whatever part is missing it could slide at the back of the main fence, so maybe some sort of hold down pressure clamp to keep the stock tight against the outfeed table/fence

Sadly, no. Mine doesn't have the elaborate fence adjustment but the sliding slot is exactly the same. I haven't got a clear pic of the back of my fence.
