Smile Newcastle Browser has Joined the Club

Hi there, I have often looked at posts when directed by Google after one of my numerous searches on wood turning and decided that I should become a member and participate in the site.

I have been turning, almost exclusively bowls, for just on 2 years now and it has become a real passion. When I first started I was always chasing suitable wood for bowl blanks but as time has passed and people have become aware of my newfound hobby I am finding that I am now getting more offers than I can accommodate (well not quite but you know what I mean!) Some of it is quite large too and I have had to upgrade my chainsaw to accommodate the logs I have been offered, but that is the subject of another thread.

I have attached a photo of a bowl that I made from privet, yes privet. It is 210mm diameter and 100mm high, that was some bush! I dyed it as the wood is very pale and the grain is not that strong. I also received some good camphor laurel from the same person a few doors up that is drying out nicely as well.

I am a member of Woodturners of The Hunter and have found their help invaluable, not to mention the great camaraderie of my fellow turners. I would encourage anyone in the Hunter that is interested in turning to check out the web site, Woodturners of the Hunter: Woodturners of the Hunter, or come along to the club at the show ground and have a look.

I am looking forward to taking advantage of the experience of other members.

    Steve

Welcome to the forum Steve hope you have fun at The Wood Turners. There's a lot of woods and other things that people consider rubbish or weeds that turn very nicely. It all about exploration in material, shape and finish Don't ask Wheelin though, he's a boring old phart

I have found that most WOTH members take as well as they give which is what makes it such a good club.

And here I was thinking that I was the only good looking grey haired old guy there!

I usually attend on a Monday night as I have trouble fitting other opening times in around work and children's activities. I will try to get in on one of the monthly meetings before the end of the year.

    Cheers, Steve
