What do you do to help others

Another thread made me think along these lines as to what do we do for other people to help them in one way or another. Something you don't get paid for. I mean we probably have all given some of our woodworking projects to someone for free but besides that, do you do anything else to give something back so to speak? I recently thought to myself (dangerous I know) what could I do to help others in some way or another if only in a small way. I didn't really want to do charity work where I wouldn't see the results of my effort and some charities don't sit well with me but that's another story.
So I joined an organization and became a volunteer member as mentors to teach the over 50's how to use a computer and I have found this to be very rewarding to myself and I see the results first hand which is very pleasing.

So it set me off to wonder what others may do in any spare time they get.

John, I've been a member of a Surf Life Saving club for over 30 years, with 22 years active patrolling. I am still involved, albeit on a more supporting manner due to injury and workload from the paying job, but whenever I meet up with my mates we all still have a laugh and the sense of camaraderie is something else.

I do one day a week as a volunteer at the Manningham Mens Shed which is run by the local community health service to help disabled ( either physical or other) or elderly men in the community. It's a fun time and I can see how my help is making a difference to some great guys.

BTW I have a similar view on a lot of those charities as you John.

Well I pay my staff and suppliers on time and in full!

Seriously, I applaud you blokes who have the time and motivation to help others. It's something I want to take on when I give up the 60hr week craziness and the kids grow up. Until then I donate where I can.

I think thats what its all about Peter, getting that feeling you get when you see some positive results from your efforts. Nice to hear from all who have responded to this thread and to know a little bit more about our fellow forumites.

mpow my neighbours front yard every time I mow....shes old and got a bad back.

I also do SLSC with my daughter.

Apart from that Ijust generally offer a hand when ever it is needed if I have the time, money and or energy.

My good deed for this Xmas was as follows.

At work we have an increasingly frequented change/shower room which by the end of each year is full of skanky smelling stuff, like used un-mentionables and towels. 2 weeks ago I put out an email to the 80 odd staff in our building that we were having the annual clean up (something I forgot to do last year) and they had one week to clear the change room of their gear before it got thrown out. Last friday evening when I went to clear out the room I noticed that amongst the stuff there were some very good pairs of shorts, T-shirts and dozens of towels. So all weekend our washing machine ran nonstop and I washed and dried shorts t-shirts and towels. The torn and faded towels went to SWMBO stables, while the decent shorts, T-shirts plus about two dozen towels all sanitized, washed and folded were delivered to Salvos yesterday morning
