well 2 of us have spent a week clearing out the ceiling cavity in my old hse took a day to get the manhole cut and then started cleaning 100yrs of rubbish out of the ceiling tried brooms and dustpans ok but the bags where filling fast next the air compressor to blow the stuff out but after 5 mins couldnt see at all or breathe next got the garden blower/vac up there but the dust went straight thru the bag as bad as the compressor so went to the hardware store and got some plastic flume pipe put that on the blower /vac ran it out the edge of the eaves ( they are open eaves ) so was able to run the pipe straight out success got rid of heaps in a very short time .

But haveing done that found that some of the timbers in the roof where stuffed years of water damage etc so ended up having to take off all the end of one of the gables and replace some of the bearers that where there so while the end off decide to re blow it and couldnt believe how much stuff was still up there so while doing that am going to put in the isulation and some chicken wire as well to stop the possums and of cousre tonight is blowing like mad and looks like rain as well just my luck

now i was also thinking of putting in a few sheets of the clear roofing stuff (versalight ??) to get some light up there and also then install some ' frosted glass windows ' in the ceilings inside , as its a very dark hse would this work would the stuff last and would it join in with the old metal roofing ?? anyone got any ideas ??

As for cleaning out bought a vax started at the manhole cleaned around it then installed a hatch with fold down ladder then did the rest
reckon it was about 2 tonne in total , it had a tin roof that had been replaced with a tile roof but no debris removed in between
Now have a great workshop vacuum cleaner and I can shampoo rugs as well

Most people would be horified if they knew how much rubish is in their cielings.
You probebly need to look at getting the roof space at least partly sealed up to stop the stuff blowing in there.
Unsealed eaves.
stuff comes happily blowing allong in the wind, wind hits the wall & goes straight up under the eaves taking garbage with it into the roofspace.

A very nasty bushfire hazard. Sparks will do the same.
