Cubism Competition 2022 - shanesmith80
"What the HELL is with all you other slackers, come on get with it.[emoji2959][emoji2959][emoji2959][emoji2959][emoji2959][emoji2959].
MATT."
OK OK
Hint taken.
Daughter has been talking about a particular sought of box so thought I'd give that a go.
Have a Blackwood board thats been laying around for a few years.
IMG_2854.jpg
Chopped and milled it up. Bit long at the moment, will have to chop it up some more to make it fit the 500 x500.
IMG_2897.jpgIMG_2899.jpg
Got some veneer thats been laying around for a while too. Some of its flat, some not so much.
IMG_2856.jpg
But after spraying it with some flattening solution and pressing it for a week came out nice and flat. Forgot to take any photo's off that. Popped it into the new vacuum bag and glued it down to some MDF(does that count as wood?). Came out ok.
What to put on the other side?
cheers
Shane

It’s looking good Shane; are you going to tell us what the box will be for or are we to be left in suspense until we figure it out ourselves with new clues added periodically?
I’m intending to use splines on my mitre joints (got some lovely ebony!), how did you cut yours; by hand or on the table saw?Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

I'll hold off on the inside, though some of the next steps might help give it away.
Cut the splines on the table saw then I have a 2mm chisel which I used to clean up and get flat bottoms.

Shane,
You might possibly get an extra 0.001 point for a tidy workshop, possibly??.
Cheers Matt.[emoji6]

Feel free to have a guess.

You could say I turned these but was more like forced in to shape with 80 grit sandpaper. These will be incorporated in some way?
Also I though I would try mount my bench to the wall and work of it side ways for a while.)

Does it have anything to do with jewellery?
The side ways bench means the dust and shavings fall straight to the floor. Good ideaThose were the droids I was looking for.

Shot in the dark here… is it a box containing a game; backgammon, checkers or similar?

Firstly, Chief got it, backgammon board.
Secondly, ... All of which is my own doing.
So it was pretty much finished.
IMG_2904.jpgIMG_2905.jpgIMG_2902.jpg
I made the inside board game first. Tried my best to make an accurate triangle template, then cut out lots of veneer triangles. This was just a trial at the start so I wasn't putting as much effort into accuracy as I probably should have. I figured if it worked I would probably make another one. I will not!
Anyway the pattern turned out ok so, stuck it down and then done the Burl veneer above. This is where the lack of attention showed through as the game boards weren't square. Oh well, soldier on. Made allowances for the out of squareness in the rebates of the box. But as can be seen in the full photo, things didn't quite line up and can see some of the border material. Ahh, whatever, still works.
IMG_2906.jpg
Cut up some discs for the game pieces. Jarrah and Salmon gum. Was going to put leather on the bottom but ended up using the flocking that I done the side trays in. Come out ok, time will tell how it lasts.
IMG_2903.jpg
Laid out and put in this little latch from Gerner hinges. This is where the frustration started. It worked, but not well. My layout was obviously 1/2mm out and it just didn't catch properly. So after much to and froing between, she'll be right and No needs to be redone. I drilled the pieces out. As happens when drilling brass, the drill bit grabbed the brass and cracked the inside of the pieces tray. No biggie, a little glue, some more flocking and fixed. Needed to fill the holes, so thought some brass inlaid in would look good. Filed up some brass and inlaid it and it did look alright. Marked out for the new holes, started drilling and yep, you guessed it, it bit again and tore out the brass piece. Once agin my own stupid fault, trying to drill incrementally bigger holes(with a hand drill) well could fit under drill press. Luckily it didn't damage it so I will eventually get around to just inlaying some same species timber. But first I need to get out the other piece of brass on the other side, hopefully without breaking something.
IMG_2925.jpg I did tidy up the work shop though in an attempt to get some more bonus points.

The “defects” are only really visible to you; I reckon your daughter will be stoked!
