    Default FIXING KITCHEN BENCHTOP

I've got a kitchen benchtop that looks lovely but is a pain in the neck also. There are two benchtops and on each there is one large crack that keeps coming up. I tried sanding it a few times and packing it with a hard putty but to no avail - in fact I sanded way too much off one of them and ended up with an uneven finish. I then got an expert in to fix it up and put on a coat of burnishing oil - $600 later and no better. And he's gone off to another town to start a cafe and won't answer his phone!
Then last weekend we had a sloppy painter do the kitchen walls and he dropped plenty of enamel paint on the benchtop which we had to get off with turps. This has dulled the finish quite a bit.
I'm not sure what to do the fix the benchtop now on two levels:
    1. is there any way I can get rid of this crack for good?
    2. How can I re-invogorate the oil finish - can I use some of my livos counter-top oil on it, or is that not OK after burnishing oil has been used. I've got a reasonable sander, but I'm not sure if I'm experienced enough to actually use a burnishing oil myself.

    Thanks all.
