When you say "not working" what do you mean exactly? What have you tried to determine whether they are working? More info is required.

yep, more info needed, Were they working and stopped working suddenly or have they never worked. Is this a new computer and have you just set it up? Simple things to try would be to see if USB ports are enabled in the BIOS. You can also check out in Device manager if they are working correctly or may need a driver to be installed. A restore may fix the problem.
Reality is no background music.

Try updating the motherboard drivers. Try deleting them and re-loading. What operating system are you using? ALso google the laptop model and see if anyone else has had the same trouble.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

As was posted above, reload the motherboard drivers - you may have a CD that came with the computer, or lookup the manufacturers web site for a copy of the newest drivers.
If you bought the machine second hand, I know some Government departments had the motherboards butchered, cutting curcuit tracks to stop any access to the ports, which caused anyone buying the machines second hand all sorts of problems.
