Black Bean and Rock Maple
This is a large keepsake box that was made after a request from a grandaughter.
I purchased a few Black Bean boards from Greg Ward some time ago and machined them into 13 mm boards for box making.
The accents are from Rock Maple and the lid inset is Birds Eye Maple veneer on the outside and Elm burr veneer on the inside.
The lid stays are fully morticed into the base and for such a large box are the ideal way of completely eliminating stress on the hinges.
I had the engraving done by a local laser engraver who carried out the work before the inset was assembled in the lid.
The box is lined with a pig skin suede and measures 380 mm x 285 mm x 150 mm high.
.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Nice work.
The thought behind it brought a tear to my eyes.

Beautiful box, beautifully made. I love Blackbean too but haven't made any boxes in it yet. You have now inspired me.

Thank you all for the comments.
I purchased the lid stays and hinges from Veneer Inlay. The lock is made by Jacksons in Tasmania and this and the escutcheon were purchased from Brass Plus in Tempe. NSW.And my head I'd be a scratchin'

Very nice box, may I ask how much did the engraving cost,.??
And,.......for your pigskin suede lining, do you put it onto 3mm mdf and tuck and glue the sides under it,..?

Paul.
The total engraving cost was $20 and I supplied the artwork in PDF format on a memory stick.
I attach the pig skin to art board that is purchased from an art shop. It is just a stiff paperboard about 1 mm thick and is adhered to the pigskin with spray on adhesive also sourced from an art shop.
The covered pieces are attached to the box using a super aggressive double sided tape.
Hope this helps. And my head I'd be a scratchin'

Hey there Ruddy, thanks for that info. $20 is very cheap, you got a good deal I think. I had a reason for asking and it should make sense as I am about to put up another thread on a box of mine

Magnificent box Ruddy, well done I like the mix of timbers, and how you have highlighted the blackbean grain with the use of plain beading

Hi again Ruddy, can you please tell me where to get pigskin?
Also, how did you finish this box? When I oil black bean, it tends to go much darker.
keep up your great work and thanks for sharing, it is inspiring to us allregards,
Dengy
